1938 Willys Overland Model-38 Pickup
Willys is a company that is most closely associated with the Jeeps they built for the US Army during World War II, but their history dates back far before that. Founded in 1908, when John Willys bought the Overland Automotive Company, the Toledo, Ohio based company built affordable vehicles under the name of Willys-Overland for nearly 20 years. The Willys 38 debuted in 1938 and featured a new, sleek, aerodynamic design and was capable of 65 mph top speed, while returning nearly 25 mpg, making it one of the most efficient vehicles on sale in the era. The 38 was offered as a coupe, sedan or pickup truck and offered great versatility and maneuverability thanks to its smaller than normal size.
This Willys Model-38 is a very nice example of the uncommon truck that has been comprehensively restored by a prior owner and remains in excellent condition throughout. Finished in two-tone Willys Gray With Rolls-Royce Blue on the fenders and running boards, the color scheme does a wonderful job highlighting the Model-38's unique streamline design characteristics and makes it look quite upscale. Beautiful wood side rails on the bed give the truck a distinctly classic look along with the chrome bumper and swept back grille slats. Gray color matched wheels are accented with chrome beauty rings, center caps and whitewall tires, and LED tail lights have been installed in the rear.
The interior is beautifully simple- when you open the door, you are greeted by a single bench seat wrapped in black vinyl, and black carpeting lining the floor of the truck. Sitting down into the cabin, a large 3-spoke steering wheel sits in front of you with a gray dashboard, painted to match the exterior of the truck. Interestingly, the gauges are not laid out directly in front of you, but instead, they are in a center unit and consist of a large speedometer with beautiful numbering and a watch-like needle, as well as a temperature gauge and a tri-gauge with fuel level, amps and oil pressure within.
Under the hood of this Willys sits a 134ci L-Head inline-4 cylinder engine that is claimed to have been rebuilt by a previous owner. Topped by a single barrel carburetor, this engine is well known for its efficiency, but was rated from the factory with 48 horsepower. This is connected to a 3-speed floor shift manual gearbox which is fully synchronized, and the power is then sent to the rear wheels. The underbody of the truck is remarkably nice and it has clearly not been used significantly since the restoration.
Just three years after the production of this Willys, the company's factory began producing military vehicles and passenger car sales were put on hold. These are exceptionally rare trucks and many of the examples that do exist have been turned into gasser dragsters or hot rods over the last 50 years and finding one in great, stock condition is remarkably difficult. This example is in beautiful condition throughout and would make a fun truck to run around town in and a great addition to any garage.
