1940 Oldsmobile Woody Wagon
When it comes to classic Americana, there are few vehicles that come to mind more than a classic wood paneled station wagon. Be it a trip to the cabin in the woods or out along the beach going surfing, the “woodie” wagon has become a staple in the minds of Americans as one of the go to classic cars-and with good reason. The late 1930s into the early 1940s was the short period of time that manufacturers were using wood as a design element on the exterior of their cars. Although an unconventional choice at the time, the craftsmanship and unique look truly set these cars apart and make them some of the most widely loved classic cars on the road today. Originally built in 1940, this Oldsmobile woody wagon encapsulates everything that is great about a classic woody but has been comprehensively updated for performance, reliability and comfort.

When the previous owner decided to build a woody restomod, they set out to find the best base car to begin their project. What they found in this 1940 Oldsmobile was a car that had been in single family ownership from the time it was purchased new until they sold it to the builder in 2016. Because the car had been so lovingly cared for, when it came time to start the transformation, almost no bodywork needed to be done- the car was almost completely straight to begin with and the panels all remain largely original. The same goes for the wood which, although it has been completely taken apart, refinished and reassembled, remains 90% original to what was first placed on the car in 1940. While the car was taken apart, it was resprayed in a beautiful 3-stage PPG blue/gray hue and all of the chrome work and stainless trim was refinished to perfection. On the inside, everything was redone to original factory specifications but important upgrades such as Vintage Air and Heat and a stereo in the glovebox were installed.

The underpinnings of the car are where the upgrades truly shine. Under the hood is a 350ci Chevrolet Vortec V8 with some modest upgrades to provide plenty of passing power and a relaxed cruise on the highway. Backing up the engine is a Turbo 350 automatic transmission with a column shifter that sends power back to a Ford 8” rear end. The suspension has been upgraded with 2-way adjustable coilovers at all four corners and a Mustang II front end with independent suspension and power disc brakes means the car drives better and rides more smoothly than any car from 1940 could ever dream of. The restoration of the car was completed in 2018 and since its completion, it has won awards at a number of shows including a Best Of Show trophy at Woodies on the Lake in Lake Arrowhead, CA in June of 2018. There was also a 6 page article on the car in Woodie Times magazine that details the build even further. With 900 miles added to the odometer since the restoration was completed, it is essentially fresh off a full build, yet it has had time for all of the little issues to be ironed out and is now ready for you to hop in and enjoy. If you have always wanted a woody but not wanted to deal with the struggles of owning an 80 year old car, this 1940 Oldsmobile is built for you.
