After Chevrolet debuted the Corvette in 1953 as their brand's halo car, Ford quickly realized that it needed to follow suit and build a two seat sports car of their own. Unveiling the first prototype just one month later in February 1953, the Thunderbird was a two door Italian-inspired coupe built for traveling both at speed and in great comfort. With the first production models available for purchase at the end of 1954 as 1955 model year cars, the Thunderbird featured a new design language for Ford with slimmer tailfins, a low cowl and a hood scoop out front. The 150mph speedometer alluded to the sporting nature of the car and the removable fiberglass hardtop added practicality over a standard cloth convertible top. In the first year of production, the Thunderbird outsold the Corvette by 23 to 1 and for the first two years of production, the design remained largely the same. For the 1957, Ford wanted to freshen their design and, in an effort to gain some ground on the all new 1957 Corvette, they offered multiple new engine options. The tailfins grew and the trunk got longer, the grill became wider and the interior gauge cluster received a major overhaul- these design modifications were so well received that Ford had once again broken their own sales record with over 21,000 Thunderbirds built in 1957 alone.
This 1957 Thunderbird was an early example off of the production line at the Dearborn plant- produced in February, it was delivered to California in a stunning color combination of black over red. Taking advantage of the newly available engine options, the first owner selected the "E-Code" package(1 of 1,499) which included a 312ci V8 with dual Holly four barrel carburetors, an aluminum intake and a special camshaft. All of these combined to produce 270hp and were run through a three-speed floor shift manual gearbox with overdrive (1 of 522) to produce a very capable touring car. Numerous convenience options were also selected including power steering, power brakes, power windows, a signal seeking AM radio, engine dress up kit, electric wipers and a heater/defroster. With a bevy of comfort options, this Thunderbird was perfectly equipped for the first owner to press into daily driving duties or to be kept as an ideal weekend runaround.
In 2012, the car was restored to one of the best Thunderbirds in the world. Setting into a full nut and bolt restoration, the car was resprayed in its original Raven Black paint which was then block sanded and polished to a mirror shine, the interior was redyed to restore luster to the original red upholstery and the drivers seat was subtly repositioned to give the driver just a bit more leg room. The black soft top was replaced along with the tonneau cover and the hardtop was treated to new paint and refinished chrome trim. A smaller diameter factory-look steering wheel was added as well as stainless dual exhaust and an electronic pointless ignition system for increased reliability. So much care was taken that even small things like engine and chassis markings from when it was coming down the production line were replicated. What rolled out of the workshop was a perfect Thunderbird that has gone on to win numerous trophies and is ready to be driven, shown and enjoyed by the new owner.
