RUNNING AT BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE AUCTION - NO RESERVE
LOT #832- THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2024
1962 Ford Thunderbird Sport Roadster
When the third generation of the Ford Thunderbird debuted, it ushered in the concept of the personal luxury coupe to the world. Longer, lower, and wider than the previous Thunderbirds, the design commanded more attention than almost anything on the road and came exceptionally well-equipped from the factory with a suite of modern options. One big change that came about in 1962 was the option of the "Sports Roadster" package- in Ford's efforts to make the car look even more sporty. Buyers could select this package which added Kelsey Hayes wire wheels and a fiberglass tonneau cover over the rear seats that covered the cloth convertible top and gave the car a unique two-seat roadster look.
Finished in Rangoon Red and fitted with the Sports Roadster package, this 1962 Thunderbird was treated to a complete ground-up restoration in the 1990s and has been stored in a climate-controlled facility ever since. During the restoration, the chrome, as were the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, which are fitted with wide white-wall tires, were refinished. The black Haartz cloth convertible top is power actuated and folds beneath the fiberglass tonneau cover, which then displays a pair of "speedster humps" behind the seats.
On the inside, black leather covers the spacious front bucket seats, as well as the center console and dashboard. As this Thunderbird was built at the peak of the space age, swathes of stainless trim are present on the dashboard and center console. Powering the Sports Roadster is a 390ci V8 topped with a 4bbl carburetor, which is connected to a 3-speed automatic gearbox and sends power to the rear wheels.
In total, Ford produced just 1,427 Sport Roadsters in 1962, and far fewer remain on the road today. Included with this Thunderbird is a letter to the previous owner from "Ms. Thunderbird" Lois Eminger, with information about the car, as well as all of the original Ford documents. The Sport Roadster is a two year only body-style for the Thunderbird and would be a welcome addition to any car collection. Original window sticker, restoration paperwork, and restoration photo album included in the sale.
