1964 Buick Riviera
The first generation of Buick Riviera is a car that has presence on the road like nothing else to have come out of General Motors in the 1960s. This beautiful 1964 example embodies that perfectly and with some subtle upgrades, will get looks wherever you drive it! An exceptionally well presented car, this Riviera has been painted in a stunning, understated shade of Slate Gray Metallic which does a great job of highlighting all of the design details and modernizes the look. The brightwork on the car is all in very nice condition and a set of polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels on whitewall tires do an impressive job of tying the whole car together.
On the interior, each of the four passengers get their own black leather bucket seat and are surrounded by swaths of beautiful aluminum trim. As the Riviera was designed to be a luxury coupe, features such as Air Conditioning, power seats, power steering and cruise control were all included from the factory. An original push button AM/FM stereo looks great in the dashboard and is complimented by a modern Kenwood stereo hidden in the glove compartment. Under the hood lies Buick's famous 425ci Nailhead V8. Producing 340 horsepower and a staggering 465 Lb-ft of torque, it does a remarkable job of moving this coupe down the road at speed and sounds fantastic doing it. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a three speed automatic transmission which shifts smoothly while being durable at the same time. The Buick Riviera is an American classic that may not get talked about as much as Corvettes or Chevelles but has looks to rival either of those and can carry the whole family in the best amenities 1964 had to offer!
In the late 1950s, Ford's Thunderbird moved away from the small, sporty car intended to compete with the Corvette and moved to a longer, more well appointed two door and with this, kickstarted a model segment that defined the 1960s and 1970s in America- the Personal Luxury Coupe. As the new Thunderbird quickly took off, General Motors wanted to follow suit. Inspired by a one off Rolls-Royce seen in London, GM's famed head of design Bill Mitchell penned what is one of the most beautiful coupe bodies to ever come out of America and started a line of cars that lasted over 40 years. The Riviera debuted in 1963 and became a knockout success, as one of the only GM vehicles to utilize its own platform upon its debut, the Riviera was longer than the current Thunderbird yet weighed nearly 400lbs less and featured either a 401ci or 425ci version of Buick's famed Nailhead V8 engine. Because of this, the car was lauded at the time for its driving dynamics and period publications stated it was an excellent balance of performance and comfort.
