1964.5 Ford Mustang Convertible
The story of the Mustang debut is one of the most famous tales in the classic car world, launched in April of 1964, the cars made between April and September of 1964, are widely referred to as 1964.5 examples. This stunning Mustang convertible is one of the cars sold during that time period, built on June 24th 1964. Benefiting from a comprehensive restoration, this Mustang is in outstanding condition and has been brought back to its original specification of Caspian Blue With a white/blue vinyl interior and a white vinyl soft top. The exterior of the car benefits from a wonderful paint job and the deep metallic blue paired with the chrome accents around the car, makes for a car that really stands out. Optional wire wheel hubcaps with narrow whitewall radial tires are fitted which are rarely seen on Mustangs of this vintage any more but give a nice period correct look to the vehicle. Although this car was largely restored to how it would have rolled out of the factory, one difference is the addition of LEDs in the tail lamps- this isn't noticeable from the outside, but makes the car far safer to drive at night thanks to increased brightness.
The white interior offers a stunning contrast to the dark exterior paint color, and is accented by dark blue carpeting and dash upper. It is no surprise why the Mustang became so immediately popular once you slide behind the slim, sporty 3-spoke steering wheel. A simple dashboard lays out in front of you with a long horizontal speedometer that features gauges on either side, with stainless trim present throughout the interior to make everything look a bit more upscale. Sitting below the dash between the two front seats is a trio of vents that are hooked up to the functional air conditioning system- which has recently been converted to R134. The convertible top is power actuated and when folded down, sits beneath a white cover that matches the top and interior wonderfully.
The Mustang offered many ways that you could customize the car to suit your needs and budget- from the base inline-6 to the potent "K-Code" V8, one of the things that made these so popular was the amount of choice given to the buyers. Under the hood of this Mustang sits a "D-Code" V8, which displaces 289ci and is rated from Ford to produce 210 horsepower- which is plenty to make this car feel quick. When you pop the hood, this V8 has been fitted with chrome valve covers and a chrome air cleaner and it is clear that somebody took considerable pains to make this engine bay look both original and keep it clean and tidy. This V8 is then paired to a C4 automatic gearbox, this is the perfect Mustang for someone who wants to enjoy top down cruising in a dependable classic, made even more dependable thanks to a reported recent engine rebuild. Front power disc brakes were optioned along with power steering which mean that this car is easy to drive for anybody and there is really no reason to not use it as a daily driver when the sun is shining.
If you are looking to add a new classic to your collection or are looking to dip your toe into the world of classic cars for the first time, it is hard to do better than an early Mustang and this example is particularly nice. Although little is known about the restoration, it was clearly carried out to a very high level and thanks to its outstanding color scheme, will be a conversation piece at any Mustang meet up.
As soon as the Ford Mustang went on sale in April 1964, it immediately became one of the most sought after cars in the country and fans of the marque are some of the most die hard in the automotive world. On that day in 1964 when the Mustang first went on sale, Ford bucked all expectations and sold a scarcely believable 22,000 examples on day one. Its combination of low cost, stunning good looks, performance and numerous options packages meant that regardless of what you want to use the car for, there was a Mustang for you.
