1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396
In the world of muscle cars, there are few names that get people more excited than Chevrolet Chevelle. When you add the Super Sport 396 name to that, it elevates it to true legend status. This 1966 Chevelle SS396 is a true “138 VIN” meaning that it started life as a Super Sport, and it retains its numbers matching L34 396 ci V8. Built May 17, 1966, this Chevelle was first sold through a dealership in Laramie, Wyoming where it was delivered in Ermine White over a red interior and equipped with a Muncie M20 4-speed manual gearbox.
This car has been treated to some high quality modifications over the years to modernize its looks as well as increase performance and reliability. Finished in a beautiful shade of blue/purple called Tanzanite Pearl, the shape is accented by a pair of black stripes on the hood and trunk for an extra sporty look. The original wheels have been replaced by a set of polished 16” Torq-Thrust wheels. The paint and body are all in very nice overall condition and the chrome trim presents very well. With this unique paint, there is no doubt this Chevelle will catch people’s eyes everywhere you drive it.
The interior is finished in black vinyl with a pair of bucket seats up front separated by a console and a bench seat in the rear. The console houses a floor shifter for the 700R4 automatic gearbox and a clock is situated in front of the shifter on the column. Exterior color matched panels are fitted around the car including on the lower dashboard and door toppers. In front of the driver is a leather rimmed 4-spoke steering wheel that frames a horizontal speedometer and a “knee knocker” tachometer sits next to the steering column. A classic looking modern head unit is installed in the dash and sends the sound through a JL Audio sound system with an amp and 2 subwoofers in an enclosure in the trunk. Remote locks and an alarm system have been installed as well.
Under the hood sits the original 396 ci V8 that has been upgraded over the years for improved performance. An Edelbrock hi-rise intake and Holley Double Pumper carburetor sit on top and GM HEI ignition ensures a strong, reliable spark. An aluminum water pump was installed and the ceramic coated headers send the exhaust back through a full stainless system and Flowmaster mufflers for an aggressive but not over the top sound. The 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive sends power to the rear wheels through a 12-bolt rear end with 3.55 gears and posi-traction. To help slow everything down, a set of power Wilwood disc brakes have been installed up front. The chassis has also been upgraded with a front sway bar and rear air bag suspension.
This Chevelle is a hugely special example of one of the most desirable trim and engine combinations, paired with modern upgrades to improve the driving experience. In its unique paint scheme, you are bound to get attention anywhere you drive and this Chevelle is sure to be the star of any show.
