1966 Pontiac Bonneville
The first time the name Bonneville was put on a Pontiac, it was on a rakish, Corvette inspired show car that made the rounds on the GM Motorama show stage in 1954. Named after the famous salt flats where hot rodders would attempt to break land speed records every year, when the Bonneville went into production in 1958, it took the spot as a performance oriented full-size 2 door coupe in the Pontiac lineup. In 1965, Pontiac unveiled the 4th generation of the Bonneville with completely new bodywork and a massive 124" wheelbase. This was the most luxurious Bonneville yet and truly defined the "Personal Luxury Coupe" segment that was so popular at the time.
This 1966 Pontiac Bonneville is finished in a stunning shade of Reef Turquoise with a black "Cordova" vinyl roof and is in fantastic condition throughout. What makes this example particularly unique is that the past owner has owned the car since 1968 after purchasing it at Totem Pontiac in Seattle. Recently this Bonneville was treated to a thorough servicing at Park Place and is in outstanding driving condition, ready to be enjoyed all summer long. The Bonneville of this generation has a tremendous presence on the road thanks to its unique coke-bottle styling, long wheelbase and rear wheel covers that make the car look particularly low and wide. This car benefits from a high quality repaint where somebody clearly spent lots of time and money getting the bodywork and panel gaps dialed in, making for a truly wonderful looking car.
The interior is wrapped in Parchment colored vinyl and consists of a pair of massive bench seats. Laid out in front of the driver is a vast dashboard with a horizontal speedometer rimmed with a wood applique and a 2-spoke steering wheel that is perfect for steering with two fingers as your elbow rests on the open window sill. As this was a luxury car in the day, it comes with numerous high-end features such as power adjustable seats, a push button AM radio with dual-electric antenna and an electric clock in the dash that is still functional.
Powering this Bonneville is a 389ci V8 that produces 333 horsepower and is run through GM's newest automatic transmission at the time- a Turbo-Hydramatic 400. This example has been upgraded with an Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor that helps it breathe better and add a bit of performance. This car was equipped from the factory with power steering and power brakes which make wheeling this massive vehicle around much easier. Recently, the car was treated to a thorough servicing which included an ignition system overhaul, brake fluid flush, oil service, valve cover gaskets and transmission output seal. Additionally, the suspension received new upper ball joints and a left front wheel bearing so this Bonneville is ready to hit the street and needs nothing.
Thanks to the long term ownership, this car is nearly impossible to replicate and when you combine that with the stunning paint and body and recent mechanical reconditioning, this is one of the best Bonnevilles out there. If you have ever wanted to experience the pinnacle of 1960s American luxury and style, it is hard to do better than a Bonneville.
