1966 Sunbeam Tiger
English car manufacturer Sunbeam debuted their all new Alpine roadster in 1959. A beautiful take on the classic British sports car, the slab sided car was designed for the American market and featured a number of uniquely American elements such as tail fins and a big chrome grille. Equipped with a 1.5-Liter Inline-4, the Series 1 cars produced less than 100 horsepower and completed the 0-60 "sprint" in 13.6 seconds which was not nearly powerful enough for the US sports car buyers at the time. In 1962, Carroll Shelby was taking another now classic English sports car, the AC Ace and shoehorning in a Ford V8 and creating the Shelby Cobra- a car that was captivating audiences worldwide- and Sunbeam wanted in on some of that publicity. Around that same time, Formula 1 champion Jack Brabham approached the Sunbeam higher ups and convinced them to talk with Shelby to see if they were willing to do the same job with the Alpine that they had done with the Ace. A short time later, Shelby agreed to build a prototype and within a few months, the Tiger was born. Fitted with Ford's smaller 260ci V8, the Tiger weighed just 20% more than the Alpine but had more than double the power. They were also able to keep the weight distribution almost the same as the Alpine so the Tiger could handle as well as go.
Built between 1964 and 1967, Sunbeam built two series of the Tigers- the first came with the 260ci V8 and the second series, a 289ci V8. Over its production run, Sunbeam built 7,083 Tigers with a large percentage being sold into the United States. Quickly, people began hot rodding Tigers and they came to find that the lightweight sports car was easily capable of handling more power. For two years, a Tiger even held a class record with the American Hot Rod Association, passing the quarter mile in 12.95 seconds at 108mph.
This 1966 Sunbeam Tiger is a wonderful example of the American powered English sports car and is ready to be enjoyed for years to come. Painted in a classic shade of Carnival Red, the car has been comprehensively restored and modified to make it one of the best driving Tigers on the road. To compliment its striking red exterior, the Tiger has been treated to a fresh tan interior with beautifully upholstered seats and a flawless carpet set. When you open the hood of this Tiger, the engine looks largely stock but is actually a fully built Ford 302ci V8 that produces over 250 horsepower and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque. This engine is then run through a notchy feeling 4-speed top loader gearbox and sent to the rear wheels. The tan canvas convertible top has been replaced and in place of the stock wheels are a set of beautiful Panasport 8-spoke wheels. To add to this car's provenance, it has been authenticated by the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association and Tiger Authentication Committee and has also been reviewed by Tiger aficionado Norman Miller who has listed the car in the Tiger Registry. A beautiful factory hard top is also included along with a full binder of restoration receipts, and an original owners manual. If you are looking for a car to enjoy some top down motoring this summer, it is hard to beat a classic British roadster. And this fully restored Sunbeam Tiger with its bubbling V8 checks all the boxes for a perfect backroad cruiser!
