1967 Mercedes Benz 250SL

The Mercedes SL has become one of the most coveted models of all time and its place in the history of the automobile has been cemented as the standard to which all other luxury sports cars are measured. In 1962, 300SL production was drawing to a close and Mercedes needed something to fill its massive shoes. Based on the W194 race car, the 300SL was a technical marvel for the time and when it first came on sale to the public in 1954, was the fastest car in the world. Orders began rolling in for the car but due to its high level of technical sophistication and many unique features, it was exceedingly expensive and difficult for Mercedes to build. In 1955, they unveiled the 190SL- a similarly styled roadster to the 300SL but powered by a smaller 4-Cylinder engine and a far more reasonable car to put into mass production. But by the end of 1962, the rest of Mercedes’ design language had moved on from the curves of the 1950s to the straighter lines of the 1960s. Unveiled at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the “W113” chassis was an all new look for the SL and would replace both the 300SL and 190SL as three different engine options were made available at the time.

Available at introduction in 230SL and 280SL variants, both of the new SLs were convertibles with an optional removable hardtop. This hardtop had a very distinctive concave roofline that gave this generation of SL the now famous nickname “Pagoda”. Although not derived from a race car like the previous generation, the Pagoda was still a very solid performer- all of the engine choices were fuel injected and the car had numerous aluminum panels to keep the weight down. The short wheelbase paired with a wide chassis made the car a great handler and updated braking made it stop well too. The 230SL was the base model at introduction but in 1967, Mercedes showed the 250SL as its replacement. Produced for only one year between 1966 and January of 1968, the 250SL featured the same sporty suspension as the 230 but the engine increased in power and disc brakes were now available at all four wheels. Only 5,196 250SLs were produced and only 1/3rd of them made it to the US.

This 250SL is a wonderful example of a Pagoda SL presented in the classic shade of Papyrus White with a Navy Blue Soft Top and Blue MB-Tex interior. The car is recently out of a comprehensive service by Park Place and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner! The current owner of the car purchased it in August of 1985 in Bellevue, WA and has taken very good care of the car ever since. The car has service records dating back to the mid 1990s and the factory hard top is included along with a hoist for removing it safely. The interior features a period correct Blaupunkt AM/FM radio and what are believed to be the original floor mats. This 250SL would make a perfect around town car or a pleasant touring car for top down driving on sunny days and with its recent service, it is now running as well as the day it rolled out of the showroom and is ready for many more miles ahead!
