1968 Ford Mustang Resto-Mod Widebody Coupe
The 1968 Ford Mustang is one of the most instantly recognizable cars anywhere. It was one of the final years that retained the original silhouette of the 1964 Mustang, but as America was deep in the muscle car age, it had received a subtle makeover, to bring it visually closer to its competition from Chevrolet and Dodge. It was also available from the factory with larger engines and lots of performance options that made it more appealing to speed enthusiasts. These days, many enthusiasts see this era of Mustang, before the design really started to change going into the 1970s, as the pinnacle of classic Mustang and it is a perfect platform to build a hot rod from.
This 1968 Ford Mustang has been painstakingly restored and upgraded, turning it from a relatively basic Mustang notchback, into a fire-breathing resto mod. Finished in sinister all-black, the first thing that strikes you about this car is the bulging fender flares with a set of 17" Weld racing wheels beneath them. These flares are needed to house the massive 255-section front tires and 315s in the rear, meaning that this Mustang is absolutely glued to the ground. All of the body modifications are built by Maier and in addition to the fenders, include items like a deep front splitter, cowl induction hood with functional hood pins, and a Shelby-style rear end with a decklid spoiler and wide tail-lights. Much of the work on this restoration was carried out by Swtymtl in Carnation, WA and it has been completed to a very high standard. When you combine these elements, what results is one mean-looking Mustang that is ready to hit the drag strip at any moment.
On the interior, it is a beautiful blend of classic and modern. The simple dashboard in stainless steel remains, but in front of the driver sits a set of ProComp gauges that offer accurate readouts. Under the center of the dash is a classic look USA740 head unit that features both AUX and Bluetooth® connectivity and is tied in to the gauge cluster and allows you to have turn-by-turn directions presented in the LCD screen at the bottom of the speedometer. A full Kicker sound system has also been installed to go along with this head unit. The original short back front bucket seats have been replaced by a pair of Recaro Euro-style bucket seats that are both comfortable and offer support when you are throwing the car around turns.
Sitting under the hood is an unbelievable sounding 363ci stroker V8 that has been built up with a Bullet racing cam for increased power. This then sends power through a 5-speed Tremec manual gearbox to the rear wheels. The chassis of this car is really where it shines though- full Maier coil overs have been installed at all 4 corners as have upgraded control arms and front sway bar. Wilwood power disc brakes are fitted at all 4 wheels and feature a linelock with a button on the shifter, so you can pull the perfect, smokey burnout every single time. To ensure that this Mustang stays reliable, electronic ignition and an aluminum radiator and water pump have been fitted, keeping this massive engine cool on even the hottest days.
It's hard to not be a fan of the Mustang, but if you also prioritize performance, most classic Mustangs won't live up to your standards. This car has had a tremendous amount of time spent to turn it from a relatively basic classic, into a one of a kind backroads stormer that looks like nothing else on the road.
