1967 Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO is widely considered to be the first true American Muscle car, and was the brainchild of Pontiac CEO at the time John Z. Delorean. Debuting in 1964, the GTO was first a trim package for the Tempest LeMans, but in 1966, the GTO became its own model in the Pontiac lineup. This 1967 Pontiac GTO is a beautiful example finished in Linden Green, that is remarkably a one owner car from new. First sold at Wilen-Cornforth Motors in Puyallup, it is a lifelong Seattle-area car that has been sympathetically maintained, but never subject to a complete restoration.
The 1967 GTO received a few noteworthy styling updates over the 1966 car, that included new quad-tail lights and the GTO emblems once on the fenders, were moved to the chrome rocker panels. Linden Green is one of the best colors for these GTOs and the majority of the paint is original, and two black pinstripes run from the headlights, to the taillights along the car's main accent line. A set of chrome 5-spoke Rallye II wheels are shod in redline radial tires and provide that perfect period-correct look that ties the whole car together.
The cabin is finished in black vinyl, with a pair of bucket seats up front, and a large bench in the rear. Sitting in front of the driver is a 3-Spoke steering wheel that frames a suite of "Rally" gauges that include a 120 mph speedometer, tachometer and temperature gauges. Both the dashboard and center console are wrapped in wood applique and both the heater controls and radio are seamlessly integrated front and center in the dash. As a largely original car, the condition of the interior is outstanding, with everything looking almost like new, but with that nice bit of wear that only comes from an original car that has been loved and used for decades.
Powering this GTO is a 400ci H.O. V8 that was rated from the factory as producing 360 horsepower. That being said, in its current form, that number is likely higher thanks to a host of upgrades that include a Holley 4bbl carburetor, headers, a 3-inch stainless exhaust K&N air filter and MSD electronic ignition. These upgrades not only will likely make the car more powerful, but also improve reliability and make the car run remarkably smoothly. Power is then sent through a Muncie M20 4-speed manual gearbox to the Saf-T-Track limited slip rear differential with a 3.55 ratio diff.
It could be argued that the Pontiac GTO is the ultimate muscle car. As the vehicle that started it all, it forever has a place in the history books and has a truly dedicated following of enthusiasts. The number of One Owner GTOs still available is likely exceptionally low, and finding one with local ownership, and in such fantastic colors is no small task. This one is ready to be enjoyed all summer and would look great parked in any garage.
