1968 Porsche 911 Soft Window Targa
Long before the 911 was ever offered with a full convertible roof, Porsche sold it with a removable roof panel and it was called the Targa. Named after the famed Targa Florio road race, the car was immediately identifiable by its stainless steel roll hoop and black, vinyl covered roof section. This 1968 911 Targa is from only the second year of Targa production, and features a particularly rare zip-out rear window section, bestowing it with the nickname of "soft window."
Only built for a few years, these short wheelbase soft window cars are some of the rarest 911s from the era, and get the closest to approximating a true convertible driving experience as you could find until the mid-1980s.
This example is finished in its original color, which happens to be one of Porsche's best colors of the era -- Irish Green, paired with a black leatherette interior. The consignor purchased the car out of Canada in 2015, and sent it to Robert Hatchman Autocraft in Grants Pass, OR for a comprehensive restoration that spanned 2015 and 2016. While under restoration, no stone was left unturned with new floor panels, a refinished targa bar, and thoroughly refurbished brightwork around the car. Anybody who has dealt with a soft window Targa before knows that the plastic rear window and its associated vinyl surround can dry out and get brittle or yellow over the years, but this example has had this addressed and it is as clear as glass which really elevates the look of the entire vehicle. A beautiful set of aluminum and black finish Fuchs wheels complete the overall look, and are the ultimate wheel choice for a short wheelbase 911.
On the interior, black leatherette on the seats, are complemented by gray carpeting throughout- all of which was refurbished during the restoration. Sitting in front of the driver is a large 4-spoke steering wheel, with Porsche's classic 5-gauge dash layout in front of you, and a simple strip of stainless trim that runs from one side of the car to the other. Although this is a car from the late 1960s a modern Porsche PCCM head unit was installed which fits the car with both navigation and Bluetooth® connectivity so you really don't have to make any sacrifices on the technology front while driving your classic.
Sitting out back is the numbers matching 2.0-liter flat-6 which has been completely rebuilt by Pasadena Air Cooled during the restoration. During the rebuild, the engine received a few parts to make things more exciting such as JE pistons and hotter cams, and breathes through a pair of triple choke Weber downdraft carburetors. Power is estimated to be around 150 horsepower, which is paired to a 5-speed dogleg 901 manual gearbox, which was also rebuilt by Pasadena Air Cooled.
From start to finish, the restoration process was documented and a sample of the photos is included in this listing. If you love classic 911s, this is a particularly uncommon body style, that both looks and drives outstandingly, and would be welcome at any Porsche Club show or local car event. These short wheelbase 911s are some of the most exciting to drive thanks to their lively handling and rev-happy 2.0 liter engine, when you pair that with a top (and rear window) that can be removed, this is an experience you won't want to miss.
