This 1970 Mach 1 is the real deal R-code 428 Cobra Jet, equipped with Ram Air and the very desirable Drag Pack option. The factory close-ratio 4-speed transmission is paired to a 4.30 posi-traction rear axle. Show quality is an understatement when describing this restored and fabulous Mach 1, finished in original Calypso Coral and sporting a correct black Clarion Knit/Corinthian vinyl interior. A Deluxe Marti Report is included, showing all supporting information. From the proper finish on the undercarriage to the highly-detailed and correct engine compartment, the example offered doesn't disappoint.
Interior features include woodgrain applique on the console, dash and door panels, high-back bucket seats, factory AM/FM radio, a deluxe three-spoke Rim-Blow steering wheel, and remote driver's side mirror. The exceptional restoration boasts excellent chrome and trim with laser-straight body panels with precisely-aligned gaps.
The Mach 1 for 1970 was clearly different, with its headlamps moved inside the Ferrari-style grille mouth. Gone were the quarter-panel side-scoops. The front end design displayed a bold new grille, the grille-mounted lamps, sport hood latches, "shaker" hood and a new black hood treatment. Also noted are dual color-keyed racing mirrors, a black rear deck spoiler, a black front chin spoiler, and flanking the tail panel are deeply pocketed three-element taillights.
The R-code 428 SCJ was first presented during the 1969 model year. Mustang customers who selected either of the optional 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle ratios got more than an optional axle feature. Selecting either with the R-code 428 helped turn an "ordinary" Cobra Jet into an SCJ, and also added an external oil cooler located in front of the radiator. The oil cooler prompted the relocation of the horn to the passenger side of the core support to make room. Beginning in February 1969 this complete package could be ordered as the "Drag Pack" option with the 428 Cobra Jet engine -- what resulted became what is possibly the most desirable Mach 1.
With only 857 SCJ/Drag Pack Mach 1's produced for 1970, this just-restored example is an opportunity not to be missed. Original build sheet, Deluxe Marti Report, restoration receipts, photos, and ownership history back to 1987 all on file.
