1971 Jaguar E-Type Custom Speedster
The Jaguar E-Type is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. In an era where sports cars from Ferrari and Aston Martin were out of reach for the average car enthusiast, Jaguar developed something that was not only striking to look at but fast, and at a price many enthusiasts could afford. Because of this, the E-Type was a massive sales success for Jaguar and the car developed a cult following who enjoy modifying these legendary sports cars to fit their vision.
This 1971 Jaguar E-Type Custom Roadster is the perfect embodiment of what can be done with these cars, and how far you can take them to truly make one your own. Although some of the modifications on this car are unconventional, many of them are reversible and the overall finish of the vehicle is very high thanks to a comprehensive restoration which concluded in 2019. Finished in Opalescent Silver Blue Metallic, the paint on this E-Type is excellent throughout and the various graphics and striping on the car is just vinyl on top. One highly desirable upgrade that was carried out is the addition of an early-style closed headlight hood, which would not have come on a car this late and gives the car a far more streamlined appearance. Of the many unique pieces of this car, the rear spoiler and diffuser are without a doubt the largest variation from the stock car. Made out of aluminum, these pieces feature auxiliary lighting and do dovetail nicely with the fin which runs down the center of the car and is somewhat reminiscent of that seen on Jaguar D-Types of the 1950s. If you are looking to have an E-Type that you won't see anywhere else, it's hard to do better than this, but also, underneath these easily removable pieces is a truly top-notch example.
The custom touches carry on into the interior which has been upholstered in Blue and Silver with a pair of sport seats that feature intricate stitching and special riveting down the center. The builder of this Jaguar was clearly familiar with race cars and installed a competition car style control panel on the dashboard with auxiliary switches to control all of the car's various systems. In the center console, another switch panel has been installed with individual blade-style fuses visible and ready to be swapped out if any system begins to act up while driving. An original style black wrinkle finish dashboard remains but it has been fitted with AutoMeter gauges to keep better track of the car's vitals and a Kenwood stereo head unit has been installed in front of the passenger.
Whoever the builder of this car was clearly did not skimp on costs and the place that shows the most is under the hood. To start, an all new E-Type Fabs subframe was installed up front with a combination of Brass and Polyurethane bushings used to insure tight handling and minimal upkeep. Then, in place of the notoriously trouble-prone V12, a new 5.7-Liter Chevrolet V8 crate engine was installed which has less than 100 miles on it. This engine is not only more powerful than the original motor but, thanks to a Holley Sniper EFI, it is more reliable and far easier to work on, making it a very worthwhile upgrade. This is connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox that then sends power out to the rear wheels. A set of side-exhaust pipes gives the car a great rumble and widened wire wheels help keep the car planted on the road.
Although the styling and design choices can always be debated on custom cars, one thing that can always be appreciated is build quality and the use of high end parts. This Jaguar E-Type may have a number of polarizing modifications on it, but under the skin, it is a very high quality restoration and whoever is lucky enough to put it in their driveway, will be able to enjoy a fantastic driving experience in one of the world's most beautiful cars.
