1972 BMW 3.0 CSi
Through the decades, BMW has produced many beautiful cars. But when you ask people who know the brand's history well, almost everybody will single out the BMW 3.0 coupe, built between 1968 and 1975 as one of, if not the most stunning of them all. This 1972 example showcases the elegant lines while also being subtly modified to be both faster and more comfortable than the car that came out of BMW 50 years ago. Sold new at Peter Pan Motors in San Francisco on November 1st, 1972, this BMW started life as a carbureted 3.0 CS with a four speed manual gearbox and the larger US spec bumpers. At the time, BMW offered two options for the 3.0 Coupe, the CS which featured dual Zenith carburetors and had a 9.0:1 compression ratio while the more expensive CSi employed a Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection system and 9.5:1 compression to produce 200 horsepower at 5,500 RPM. At some point in the car's history, a CSi motor was transplanted into the body for the extra power and reliability that comes with the fuel injected car.
In addition to the motor swap, this car features a 5-speed manual transmission out of a 1988 535i. This transmission is a much stronger design and gives an extra overdrive gear for highway cruising-making this a truly excellent grand touring car. On the exterior, the car features a set of the chrome European bumpers- due to incoming crash regulations, the US units featured rubber overriders and strips around the middle while the Euro market bumpers are a much more svelte, chrome design. A set of more modern BBS mesh wheels were fitted to accommodate a wider range of tires and they look like they should have come on the car from the factory. All of these elements really highlight how fantastic this design is- the subtle, flowing curves mixed with straight lines and a massive glass greenhouse with ultra-thin pillars at the four corners. Due to modern regulations, this is not a design that could be built anymore and it represents a period of time when BMW was really firing on all cylinders.
On the inside, the simple cabin is updated with a set of heated front sport seats- an attractive design, these offer much more bolstering than the standard units and the addition of heating is always welcome when heading off early in the morning. The wood rimmed Nardi steering wheel gives that classic touch and looks great against the wood strip along the dashboard. The standard radio has been swapped out for a more modern Alpine head unit which offers far more functionality than the original. As this was a luxury car in its day, it comes with air conditioning and a beautifully trimmed dashboard that features a large speedometer and tachometer in prime placement in front of the steering wheel and lots of period looking switches down the center console. This car is very well documented and features the original service booklet with appropriate stamps, owners manual, Vin Tag plate and tools. Always intended to be a superior grand touring vehicle, this 3.0CSi has been carefully updated over its life to make those long trips an even more pleasant experience.
