In 1961, Chevrolet wanted to make a smaller compact car that filled the open hole beneath their larger Bel Air and Impala lines and could compete with Ford’s recently released Falcon. From concept to completed car, the Chevy II took less than 18 months before the first car rolled off the production line and became an immediate hit. Although it was the first Chevrolet to feature a 4-cylinder engine since 1928, people quickly realized that putting the V8s found in many of Chevy’s larger cars turned the smaller, lighter Chevy II a formidable performance car. With the Nova beginning as a trim level of the Chevy II, by 1968, the Chevy II moniker was dropped and along with a full redesign, Nova became the name of the model. The redesign ushered in a more muscular design that echoed the larger Chevelle and began offering more exciting engine options from the factory.

This 1972 Chevrolet Nova has been based in the Pacific Northwest for at least the last fifteen years and was treated to a full frame off rotisserie restoration in 2006. Starting with an already very solid example, the owner handed the car over to a local Chevrolet restoration expert with the goal of turning the car into a beautiful looking driver. Starting with the bodywork, the car was taken down to bare metal and all of the panel gaps were painstakingly lined up and the panels smoothed to a perfect flat finish. The car was then painted Placer Gold with a hand finished black pinstripe down the side. While it was apart, the underside of the car was also painted for a clean, finished look when up on a lift. All of the chrome and brightwork is new and presents very nicely and the exterior is finished off with a set of Corvette Rallye wheels to complete the muscle car look.

When it comes to mechanicals, the owner went for a tried and true GM Performance 350ci V8 but elected to have it modified with a Comp Cam, jet-coated Headman headers, an HEI Ignition and numerous chrome accent pieces. Behind the V8 is a TH350 3-speed automatic gearbox sending power back to a 3.08 limited slip rear differential. The Nova rides on Bilstein suspension and received a quicker ratio steering box for more enjoyable driving. Inside the car, the front and rear bench seats have been reupholstered to stock look and this Nova is equipped with a full gauge pack including a tachometer and auxiliary gauges.
