1972 Mercedes Benz 280SEL 4.5

Debuting in 1965 as the successor to the famed Mercedes Benz Fintail sedan, the W108 chassis was a more modern looking, spacious luxury car that changed the sedan landscape forever. When the car first went on sale, it was offered with an array of Mercedes’s famed inline-6 engines from 2.5 to 3.0-liters and with either carbouration or fuel injection as options. Although these motors were adequate to power the cars, where the W108’s legacy really comes from is the later V8 models. In 1966, a team of Mercedes engineers took the 6.3-liter V8 out of their 600 limousine and stuffed it in the front of a W108 sedan- thus creating the legendary 300SEL 6.3. The 6.3 was able to out accelerate many dedicated sports cars of the day and could happily cruise with 5 people on board at 120+ MPH all day long. A direct line can be drawn between this car and today’s AMG sedans and many view it as the grandfather of the entire sport sedan genre.

The 6.3 proved to be a perfect halo car for Mercedes but it was also prohibitively expensive to manufacture and thus, purchase. To make a similar car available to more of a mass market, for 1967, Mercedes designed a brand new V8 for the W108 chassis. This engine displaced either 3.5 or 4.5 liters and featured state of the art Bosch electronic fuel injection to provide both maximum power and relative efficiency. Both engines produced over 230 horsepower and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque-this turned the W108 from a decent performer to a car that would effortlessly cruise at speed all day. This 1972 280SEL 4.5 was built in October of 1971 and slated for sale in the United States. Upon arriving, the car ended up at Stahl Motors in Santa Cruz, California where it was sold in June of 1972 to a local area man. It remains in its original color combination of Anthracite Gray over Cognac interior and has spent its time in California and Texas before coming to Washington just a few years ago.

As this was a near top of the line luxury car in the early 1970s, it came from the factory very well equipped with air conditioning, power steering, power mirrors, power windows and a Becker Europa stereo. Everything on the car is in perfect working condition and the only modification on the vehicle is an MSD ignition box for a stronger spark. Mechanically, the car has been refurbished over the years with new suspension bushings, new shocks, a new A/C compressor and new rubber seals around the car. On the exterior the vehicle looks perfect with laser straight panels and a very modern shade of Anthracite Gray paint which received a full ceramic coating from Park Place earlier this year. Included with the car is the original jack, original stamped service and warranty books as well as receipts for work carried out on the car more recently. There are few better, usable classics than a vintage Mercedes and this 280SEL 4.5 is a perfect example of why. With more than enough power to keep up with modern traffic, this car provides the kind of refinement that Mercedes built its reputation off of and would provide years of enjoyment for whoever is behind the wheel.
