1973 Jensen Interceptor III
The Jensen Interceptor is a classic British sports car that was manufactured from 1966 to 1976 by the Jensen Motors company. Penned by the legendary Italian design house Carozzeria Touring, the Interceptor was a unique combination of Italian styling, paired with a big American V8, which was built and trimmed by some of the finest craftsmen in England. A particularly expensive car when new, the Interceptor became the go-to vehicle for rock musicians, race car drivers, and playboys of the era, who were looking for a car they could drive at speed across continents, while being in great comfort, surrounded by wood and leather.
Produced in 1973, this Jensen Interceptor is a "Series III" car, finished in Cerise Red Over a Black Connolly leather interior. What sets this Interceptor apart from the rest is a comprehensive restoration carried out by Vintage Underground Restorations between 2016 and 2018 where all aspects of the car were addressed including a new drivetrain. The result is a car that is more capable and more dependable than when it rolled out of the factory in 1973 and would be a perfect road trip or touring car, for somebody who wanted something a bit off the beaten path.
On the exterior, this car is in very nice condition, with its deep red paint shining throughout. The most notable upgrade on the outside is an "SP" hood- with rows of louvers, this hood originally came on the rare "Six-Pack" Interceptors and adds a bit of extra sporting looks to the exterior.
The inside of an Interceptor is a wonderful thing to behold in person. In front, a pair of cushy leather seats welcome you, with 2 smaller seats in the rear that can even accommodate adults for a drive. The dashboard looks like the cockpit of an airplane with a smattering of Jaeger instrumentation right in front of the driver, and extending across the top of the dash. Wood covers the center stack which houses a rare and period-correct "Lear Jet" 8-track player to really transport you back in time.
Originally, the 1973 Jensen Interceptor was powered by a Chrysler 440 cubic inch V8 engine that delivered 330 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. During the restoration, the original engine was swapped for a new crate motor that is now rated at 450+ horsepower. At the same time, the car received a host of other upgrades including electronic ignition, headers, a limited-slip rear differential, and R134 air conditioning with a modern compressor that blows nice and cold. This engine is paired to a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, which provides smooth and responsive shifting. The car also featured power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and a limited-slip differential, all of which contributed to its excellent handling and performance. Additionally, while in restoration, this car had the suspension, cooling, and fuel systems completely gone through, ensuring years of trouble-free motoring in front of the next driver.
There is no doubt that the Jensen Interceptor is a properly special car and one that every time you are behind the wheel, will be a conversation piece. For years, these cars were severely underappreciated and many fell into disrepair, when projects piled up, they became uneconomical to fix and ended up disappearing from the road. In recent years though, values have been on the rise and a nice Interceptor has become a coveted collector's item. This example, with its thorough restoration and the long list of upgrades, has been saved from that fate and is ready to enjoy a long cruise at speed with its new owner.
