1974 BMW Bavaria

In 1968, BMW debuted their "New Six" luxury sedan known as the Bavaria to unanimous praise- the company got so many things right, the "New Six" line essentially became the template BMW has followed to the present day. Starting off, when design began on the car, it was determined that the company's 4-cylinder engine used in the smaller cars wouldn't be adequate and in 1965, they began development of their now famous M30 inline-6. The interior of the car featured a more driver-centric focus than their previous sedans and an independent rear suspension was standard on all models. The front fascia of the car featured the BMW signature double kidney grille and now well known quad round headlights which defined the brand for decades.

This 1974 Bavaria is a great example of the quintessential German sports sedan that has been well cared for and carefully refurbished to add to both visual presence and driving enjoyment. Originally sold in Santa Barbara, California in October of 1974, this Bavaria was equipped with a dual-Zenith carbed 3-liter Inline-6 engine and an automatic gearbox. Standard features included 4-wheel disc brakes, dual front bucket seats, a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio and a leather interior for the 2800 models. Over the past 47 years, the car has only had 6 owners and was a California car until the early 2000s- it retains much of the original documentation including the owners manual, stamped service booklet, radio instruction booklet and a shop manual.

Over the years, the car has been customized to fit the owner's style- choosing to take the "OEM+" route by sticking to modifications that come from other BMWs. As you approach the car, the first thing you notice is the deep Monaco Blue paint that can be found on many BMWs from the mid-2000s. The front fascia has been altered by the addition of a 3.0 CSL front air dam as well as the CSL's signature aero aids on top of the front fenders and a set of Hella driving lights complete the look. The wheels have been changed to what might be BMW's most famous wheels- the BBS Style-5s and they have been fitted with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. The CSL aero package is rounded off in the rear with a decklid spoiler and quad tailpipes have been added to complete the sporting exterior. On the interior of the car, the seats have been reupholstered to feature exciting Black Watch tartan cloth centers that invoke motorsport of the period and add color to the otherwise staid Bavaria interior. To continue with the OEM+ look, a few choice Alpina bits were also added to the interior including an Alpina/Momo steering wheel and a set of aluminum Alpina pedals. Overall this is a fantastic classic with some modern flare that is just as much of a pleasure to look at as it is to drive.
