1979 Mercedes Benz 450SL

In 1971 Mercedes was poised to replace their extremely successful “Pagoda”generation of SL. After an 8 year run, Mercedes had sold over 48,000 units with over 30% of them going to the United States. With this in mind, Mercedes set out to design a new SL with its sights squarely set on the US market. What they developed quickly became the ultimate symbol of success in the 1970s and 1980s around the world and stayed in production for over 18 years. In that time, they produced over 300,000 units of which nearly 70% came to the United States. The car they developed had the internal chassis code R107 and was the first SL to heavily lean on Mercedes’ V8 which they had become known for. In North America, sales of the R107 began in 1972 and the first cars to make it over were labeled as 350SLs- these cars were equipped with a fuel injected 4.5-liter V8 and unique to the American market, four sealed beam headlights to comply with federal headlight regulations. Over the course of the next 18 years, Mercedes changed little about the R107 beyond engine and gearbox choices as they received few complaints about the cars and consistently bested their prior year’s sales.

During the R107’s 18 year run, Mercedes brought the cars over with V8s in sizes ranging from 3.8-Liters to 5.6-Liters. The most widely produced and what are known to be the most dependable of the R107s is the 4.5-Liter 450SL. This 1979 450SL is a perfect encapsulation of what makes this generation of SL great. The big V8 in front produces plenty of torque and power to waft the car along at highway speeds in supreme comfort. Coupled to a smooth shifting 3-speed automatic, this SL will be as happy burbling along on the highway as it will on a drive to the grocery store. Although Mercedes built over 300,000 R107s, this 450SL is one of just 8,184 produced in 1979. Delivered new in Westminster, British Columbia on January 22nd 1979, the car was originally painted Cypress Green but has since been refinished in this stunning and rare shade of Mercedes Signal Red. The exterior paint is complimented by a lovely Palomino Tan leather interior which gives the car a notably sporty look.

This 380SL has been carefully maintained by its local owner and numerous important service items have already been addressed. The fuel pump and brake pads were replaced in 2009 at reputable local shop Benz Friendz in Seattle. More recently, the large job of replacing the soft top was completed and it still presents in fantastic condition. While at the shop for that, the car also had the hood pad, fuel filter and fog lamp lenses replaced to bring the car to an even higher standard. The car now rides on a set of 14” chrome wire wheels shod in Goodyear tires to give the car a more upscale appearance and importantly, the factory hard top is included and in excellent condition. To show how meticulous previous owners of this car have been, the vehicle still has its original owners manual, hang tag and warranty card. The R107 series of SL is a true up and coming collectible and is truly a must own car for any enthusiast and this 450SL is a perfect example of the model!
