1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a classic American muscle car that has captured the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide. 1981 saw the introduction of the third generation of the Firebird Trans Am, which was a significant departure from its predecessors in terms of design and performance. This example is particularly unique as it has only been in the possession of 1 owner from new and shows 4,619 miles on the odometer. A lifelong Seattle area car, it was sold at Lakeside Pontiac and retains many original pieces like the window sticker, factory manuals, and warranty booklet.
One of the most noticeable changes in 1981 was the introduction of a new front-end design, which featured a redesigned nose and a sleeker, more aerodynamic hood. The new design not only improved the car's performance but also gave it a more aggressive and modern look. Finished in Dark Metallic Blue with the quintessential gold Firebird decal on the hood, this car looks stunning and is the epitome of 1980s American muscle. It is in absolutely fantastic condition throughout and has clearly been impeccably cared for over the years. A signature of this generation Trans-Am is the T-Top roof, with two removable panels, it feels like you're driving a convertible but still looks and drives like a coupe- this example still retains the original T-Top storage bags which are frequently lost over the years.
On the inside, the Custom Trim Group option gives the car plush blue velour upholstery on the bucket seats and color matches the seatbelts to the rest of the interior. The 1981 Firebird Trans Am's interior was significantly updated, with new seats, door panels, and dashboard, but it still gives off the sporty feel inside that Trans Ams have always been known for. Sitting low in the car, you get a great view out over the hood and it will always put a smile on your face when you blip the throttle and watch the shaker hood moving around just in your peripherals.
Under the hood, this 1981 Firebird Trans Am is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 150 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Although this may not sound like a lot of power today, it has gobs of lowdown torque that gives the Trans Am great acceleration and more than enough grunt to spin the tires at the twitch of your right foot. To make this car even more fun to drive, it is then equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox- with its long shift lever coming out towards the front of the center console, it offers pleasantly notchy shifts and is strong enough to stand up to whatever abuse you can throw at it.
One of the most significant improvements in the 1981 model was the car's handling and suspension. The car's front suspension was updated with new coil springs and a new sway bar, which significantly improved the car's handling and stability. In the rear, the suspension was also updated, with new shocks and a new rear sway bar that improved the car's traction and stability. To improve things even further, this car was optioned with the Performance Pack from the factory which fits a limited-slip differential, as well as power brakes and fantastic-looking gold aluminum "turbo" wheels.
Overall, the 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was an impressive car that offered excellent performance, handling, and styling. Its iconic design and features make it a popular choice among car enthusiasts today, and you will be hard-pressed to find an example that is in a better spec and has been more lovingly cared for than this car.
