1984 Porsche 928S

In the mid-1970s, Porsche engineers were seriously considering discontinuing the 911 in favor of a front engined, V8 coupe known as the 928. Although this didn’t end up happening, what resulted was one of the greatest grand touring cars of all time and a supremely special car in its own right. This 1984 Porsche 928S is a prime example of the marque and represents a unique blend of forward thinking engineering and classic driving enjoyment that can only be found with a V8 and manual gearbox. Finished in Grand Prix White, this 928 S has covered just 66,337 miles from new and was first sold on March 22nd 1984 at Braman Porsche in Miami Florida.

From the 928s debut in 1978, the design was very futuristic and featured a number of unique bits such as the flip-up headlights and seamless integration of impact bumpers- something that no other manufacturer had mastered at the time. The 928S- which went on sale in North America in 1983, took that sleek design and added new front and rear spoilers, along with a new set of very unique wheels. Seen on this car, the 16” wheels are almost flat, with just small spokes on the outside edge, increasing the aerodynamics of the car, while still keeping the brakes cool and the Porsche logo is emblazoned in the center of each one.

The interior of this 928S is wrapped in stunning bright red leather, which is accented with white piping on the seats both front and rear. The idea with the 928 when it was developed was that it would have the driving dynamics of a sports car, paired with the comfort of driving a luxury vehicle. Because of this, the interior were largely hand built and assembled and include a number of unique features like sunshades for the rear passengers and a multi-speaker sound system. A black 4-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel frames a 170 mph speedometer and a full suite of gauges that help you keep track of the car’s vitals. As the 928 was an expensive, high end car, it was fitted from the factory with all of the important features such as air conditioning, power adjustable seats, cruise control and power windows. This example has an updated Kenwood head unit with Bluetooth® connectivity, and comes with a remote.

Sitting under the hood is a very sophisticated 4.7-liter V8 with dual overhead cams and Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection that is rated for 234 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. This is connected to a 5-speed manual transaxle with a dog-leg first gear, which sends power to the rear wheels. The 928 is a car that was designed to cruise along the unrestricted Autobahn all day long, with the speedometer sitting at 130 mph- and even to this day, the way these cars settle at speed is second to none. To ensure that this 928 is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner, a timing belt service was carried out in 2019 as was an air conditioning compressor replacement, and oil seals were replaced in 2022.

Although the 928 went out of production in 1995, it holds a special place in Porsche’s history as the only front-engine V8 coupe they have ever produced, and stands the test of time as a great driver’s car. This example has been well kept and is presented in a very appealing color combination that you will not see on another car at your local PCA show.
