2002 Mercedes Benz SL500 Silver Arrow
Mercedes' SL series has been in production since 1954 and although the models have been vastly different over the years, the ideology has remained the same. Starting in 1971, the R107 became the longest produced SL series, on sale for over 25 years before the R129 was introduced in 1989. Penned by legendary Mercedes designer Bruno Sacco, the R129 SL was the ultimate expression of his now classic, angular design language which continued to inspire Mercedes design for years to come. This generation of SL featured numerous firsts for the model line including a power soft top, automatic roll bar deployment in case of an accident and the now famous V12 in the SL600.
In 1998, the SL was treated to a major facelift that both modernized the design and updated the mechanicals of the SLs. Until 1998, the SL500 was powered by the M119 V8 which, although smooth and powerful, had proven to be more maintenance intensive than Mercedes had hoped for. The replacement engine, the M113 was simpler and significantly more dependable yet with the help of modern electronics, produced nearly identical power numbers as the old engine.
For 2002, the final year of the R129 SL, Mercedes produced a special edition known as the "Silver Arrow" built to commemorate their famous race car from the 1930s with the same name. The Silver Arrow edition cars featured a full AMG body kit and were painted in a unique shade of silver that could only be found on these cars. A special set of BBS 2-piece wheels were standard and the interior had a two-tone black and white color scheme with dark burl wood accents. Only 1,550 Silver Arrows were made-of which 1,455 were SL500s and the other 100 were SL600s.
This 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow is an immaculately kept example that shows just 55,000 miles from new. The two toned interior appears to be nearly new with the white seat centers looking as if they have barely been sat in. The car retains its original BBS wheels as well as its matching hard top. If you are looking for an excellent example of what many consider to be one of the hottest next generation collector cars, look no further.
