The heart of the Corvette, of course, is its powerplant. The 6.2L direct-injection V8 has been completely rethought and now delivers 460 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque. Chevy claims the new C7 Corvette Stingray is the quickest, most powerful, most capable standard Corvette ever made. Inside, the C7 boasts a cockpit that for the first time puts it on par with some of Europe's best. The driving position is near-perfect, and the seats are vastly improved, with increased comfort and better support for hard driving. An 8-inch touchscreen dominates the center console, while soft-touch materials are more abundant.
With 460 horsepower on tap, Chevy didn't even employ the active exhaust system, which adds 5 horses---the Stingray Z51 can hit 60 mph in a claimed 3.8 seconds and trip the quarter-mile lights in just 12 seconds at 119 mph. Chevy says the Stingray can haul itself down from 60 mph in 107 feet and hang on for 1.03 g of lateral acceleration. Taken at face value, Chevy's performance estimates are impressive. The Premiere Edition isn't going to be hard to pick out of a lineup. There are Stingray logos on the center caps of the chrome wheels, on the sill plates, and a prominent "stinger" stripe on the hood.
